Fight for No: 1 Spot

Cricket world is now witnessing a very good fight for the number one spot. Current world champions Australia is having a tough time. They lost two series recently to India and South Africa the Two main challengers for the No: 1 spot. South Africa which had a fabulous 2008 is very close to the spot. If they can win the third test against Australia they can claim it now itself. Else they will have to wait for another series. Australian team is struggling with a weak bowling attack.

Australia's defeat at the MCG - completing their first loss of a home series since the distant summer of 1992-93 - was set in stone by South African captain Graeme Smith, who led the way with 75 to claim his nation's first test-series win on Australian soil.

South African skipper Smith rated this feat South Africa's greatest achievement in the 110 years since they played their maiden test, which included 23 years of apartheid-enforced isolation.

Ponting hoped to hold on to his side's status as the world's top-ranked side in Sydney. "Right at the moment I think we are still No 1," the Australian captain said. "They have to beat us in Sydney to take that mantle from us. That's the way that ranking system works.

India is also improving steadily. They won the home series against Aussies 2-0. They are also closing the gap to the number one spot.
For Australians who think the current time is tough, a look back to the1950s should make them feel better. On the 50th anniversary of the 1958-59summer, the surviving players remembered winning back the Ashes 4-0 withtheir first series victory over England since 1948.
